   Proposal Description:
   Background/Rationale:                                                             Depression is a psychiatric syndrome comprising various symptoms, with            significant heterogeneity in clinical presentation (Carragher, Adamson,           Bunting,  McCann, 2009). Past research has suggested a relationship of            depression with increased risk for dementia (Byers  Yaffe, 2011), but the         nature of this relationship remains unclear. Further, the relative importance     of specific depression symptoms in predicting incident Mild Cognitive             Impairment (MCI) or dementia is not known (Brailean et al., 2017). For example,   prior studies indicate that symptoms of depression reflecting apathy or           withdrawal may be more predictive of cognitive decline compared to depressed      affect (Berger, Fratiglioni, Forsell, Winblad,  Backman, 1999 Richard et al.,     2012).  As depressive symptoms represent a modifiable risk factor for MCI and     dementia, there is a need for research which further elucidates the               relationship between depressive symptoms and progression to clinical status.      The proposed research will first identify demographic and cognitive correlates    of specific dimensions of depression in this population. This study will          further examine the association of specific subsets of items from a               widely-implemented depression measure, the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale     (GDS-15), with cross-sectional and longitudinal cognitive status.  The            long-term goals are to use such information to help clarify the relationship of   depression with dementia and to identify subsets of depressive symptoms, such     as apathy symptoms, that may be most related to risk for progression.             Specific Aims:                                                                    Aim 1 Examine the cross-sectional patterns of GDS-15 symptoms in NACC             participants age 65 and older.
